BPI Financial Group ("BPIFG") through its subsidiaries, hold licenses to operate regulated businesses in Hong Kong and Singapore. BPIFG is a subsidiary of a Hong Kong Exchange listed company – Theme International Holdings Limited.
Theme International Holdings is a listed company on the Hong Kong Exchange since 1994 with a market capitalisation of HKD 18 billion (as of Aug 2021). The promoters of BPIF acquired majority shares of Theme International Holdings with the aim of transforming it from a garment business into a financial powerhouse. The rationale behind this is to create a strong footprint in both global derivatives and equity markets including asset management and other financial services.
The shareholders collectively represent different segments of the industry including producers and miners (of bulk commodities – iron ore and coking coal), consumers of bulk commodities (top steel producer) and commodity trading funds (bringing a financial trading perspective which is distinct from physical commodity market).
BPIF Group aspires to establish a financial services platform facilitating international trade in commodities with combined access to both physical and derivatives market.
The spirit and aspiration in starting BPIF Group is to establish a financial services platform facilitating international trade in commodities with combined access to both physical and derivatives market. The service providers in the market in general and more so in Asia, are fragmented. Traditional market participants operate either solely in physical commodity market or entirely in the financial space.. The ability to combine services access to both the derivatives and physical market powerful and allows firms in that combined space with greater reach to its customers.
BPIF Group through its subsidiaries, hold a Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) Type 2 license in Hong Kong and a Capital Markets Services Licence in Singapore under the Securities and Futures Act.
The SFC Type 2 license allows BPIF Group's subsidiary, Bright Point International Futures Limited, to collect customer funds for the purposes of dealing, clearing and settlement of derivatives across multi assets and multi exchanges and clearing houses globally; while the Capital Markets Services Licence allows Bright Point International Financial (SG) Pte. Ltd. to conduct the regulated activities of dealing in capital markets products. Bright Point International Financial (UK) Ltd. has attained the license for “derivative” under specific activities and product types from the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
